Dr. Rivera obtained his M.D. degree from Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas, where he also completed his residency in Internal Medicine.
After this he came to Montreal to do a fellowship in Endocrinology which he completed in 2001. He did an extra two years of postdoctoral research training in the lab of the late Dr. Yogesh Patel, a world-renowned authority in somatostatin receptor biology. He carried out research on the modulation of the expression of somatostatin receptors in cancer cells.
He is currently Assistant Professor and staff endocrinologist for the McGill University Health Center. The focus of his clinical work and research is endocrine tumors. He runs a busy general neuro-endocrine teaching clinic and a carcinoid-NET clinic twice a week at the Royal Victoria Hospital. He is a member of McGill’s Skull Base Tumors Group, the Head and Neck Cancer Center, the GI-NET Group, and the Thyroid Cancer Center.
Dr. Rivera developed and directs the McGill Endocrine Tumors Fellowship program. He has been part of the group of experts who developed Canadian consensus guidelines for the management of both Acromegaly and NETs. He is also the medical advisor for the Peter Witthoeft Foundation for NET research.
He has authored or co-authored papers in peer-review journals and has presented at various domestic and international conferences.
