Dr O’TOOLE is currently serving as an academic gastroenterologist in St. James’s Hospital and Trinity College Dublin where his medical career began as an undergraduate and post-graduate student. Following a post-graduate Doctoral thesis in the « Dublin Institute of Molecular Medicine » in Trinity College Dublin in 1998 he joined the pancreatic-biliary unit in Clichy, Beaujon (Université Paris VII – Faculté Xavier Bichat Paris) under the direction of Pr Philippe RUSZNIEWSKI. There, he integrated into the French University system, developing an academic career in benign and malignant pancreatico-biliary disorders and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endosonography.

He completed his senior gastroenterology training as an “Ancien Chef de Clinique des Hôpitaux de Paris” and was appointed to a senior staff position in GI oncology in Beaujon in 2004. Beaujon Hopsital also provided the platform for both clinical and molecular research activities in digestive endocrine tumours and he was investigator and/or coordinator in many national and international research activities in neuroendocrine tumours including studies involving EUS, chemoembolisation, biotherapy and angiogenesis.

In 2006 he was appointed as associate Professor (MCU-PH) in the gastrointestinal unit in Angers University Hospital where he pursued his interest in advanced endoscopic techniques in gastrointestinal oncology while retaining an active career in research in neuroendocrine tumours. He was appointed to the Executive Committee of the European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society in 2008. In 2007 he joined the gastroenterology unit in St. James’s Hospital as part of the upper gastrointestinal oncology medical-surgical team.
