Dr Pieter L. Jager

Dr. Jager obtained his medical degree and PhD (on ‘Tumor Imaging using L-3-[123I] iodo-alpha-methyl-tyrosine’) from Groningen University in the Netherlands. He received his Nuclear Medicine specialist training through the residency program at University Hospital Groningen, where he worked for about ten years. Since transferring to Canada in 2007, Dr. Jager has worked as both a Nuclear Medicine Physician and professor in the Hamilton Health Sciences/McMaster University.

He has research experience in the areas of oncology, general nuclear medicine, and neurology. As such, he supervises medical and graduate students who investigate medical imaging and radiotherapeutic techniques. He has taught courses on introductory Nuclear Medicine, nuclear cardiology, and nuclear thyroidology, and was the chairman of the Nuclear Medicine residency program at UMC Groningen from 2002 – 2007. Currently, he is the organizer of local Nuclear Medicine evening rounds program.

Dr. Jager has also given numerous invited lectures on PET imaging in Europe and across Canada, has authored or co-authored more than 150 research articles in international journals, and has contributed to several books.

He has received grants from various funding agencies, such as the Dutch Cancer Society and the Dutch Science Foundation, to conduct research on the use of Nuclear Medicine techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of various cancers, including neuroendocrine cancer, breast cancer, and thyroid cancer. Most recently, he received funding from the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research to examine the individualization of radiation treatment in patients with head and neck cancer.
