Rudolf Arnold is Head of the Federal Association of Gastroenterology of Germany. He was awarded his MD by the University of Munich, and received his postgraduate training at the Department of Internal Medicine at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in Göttingen, Germany, where his research focus included gastrointestinal hormones, immuno-cytochemistry, the endocrine stomach, neuroendocrine tumors and treatment of acid related disorders.
In 1975 he was made Professor of Internal Medicine at the Philipps University in Marburg, Germany, and in 1982 took the post of Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Endocrinology in the department. During his time with the University he has also acted as Head of the Department of Internal Medicine (1986 to 2006), Medical Director (1991 to 1995), and Dean of the Medical Faculty (2000 to 2003).
In 2006 he was appointed Chief of the Gastroentrological Federation, Germany. In 2009 he was awarded the ENETS lifetime achievement award and honorary ENETS membership. He is a member of a number of international organizations, including the German Society of Internal Medicine, the German and British Societies of Gastroenterology, and the American Gastroenterological Association. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in London, UK.
He has published more than 400 original papers in the field of neuroendocrine tumours, gastrointestinal hormones, and internal medicine, and served as Editor in Chief on the Editorial Boards of the European Journal of Clinical Investigation and Digestion.
His current scientific interests include gastrointestinal hormones, the long-term consequences of achlorhydria, the pathology and treatment of acid-related disorders, the diagnosis and treatment of neuroendocrine tumours, somatostatin, and the entero-insular axis.
