Fundraising Activities
Fundraising 2009
Our main goal was to raise $60,000. to fund our first Carcinoid NeuroEndocrine research project with the help of the Cancer Research Society, a Canadian organization that supports research projects.
Through a variety of activities, we raised the $60,000. so that with the doubling of funds by CRS, we will be able to award the very first $120,000. 2 year CNETS/CRS grant directed solely for supporting NETs research in Canada in the year 2010.
This joint initiative was announced at the Montreal conference in November and an invitation has gone out to the research community to begin submitting requests for research projects into NETs. The successful application will be chosen in early 2010.
Here is how we raised $60,000.00
Fundraising Initiatives:
- June 2009: Nine walks were held across Canada raising a little over $26,000. (Each individual walker is mentioned below)
- September 2009: Morley Dore's Ride for Research from Ottawa to Kennebunkport Maine raised $4,058.00.
- October 2009: Suzanne Stinson, Group Leader for Ottawa, held a Walk for Research in Ottawa that raised $2370.00.
- October 2009: Silent Auction at the Toronto Conference raised $3075.00.
- November 2009: Sale of 26 cases of chocolate covered almonds raised $1000.00.
- November 2009: Silent Auction at the Montreal Conference raised $350.00.
- 2007-2009: In Memoriam donations gave us $10,000.00.
- 2009- Private lump sum donations from individuals provided us with $18,000.00.
Funds from all these sources helped us reach and exceed our goal of raising $60,000. We thank everyone for their support.

June 14 Walks for CNETS
The weather was great for all the walks that took place on Sunday, June 14th. Everyone enjoyed themselves and raised a lot of money for CNETS. Here is a selection of photos in a slideshow of some of our groups.

" Here's our happy group having just come through the perils of Garry's walk without losing anyone. Or maybe, this picture was from the beginning of the walk, because we look remarkably clean and no worse for the wear"

This is the first in what we hope is a series of fundraising activites that you can join in with, sponsor, or just just get ideas from. Click on the person's name to find out more about their fundraising activity.

Vanessa's Walk
Vanessa`s Walk is Sunday June 14th at 10.00 am in Hamilton, Ontario.
I would like to sincerely thank everyone for all their support. The Hamilton-Wentworth/Niagara (and area) group enjoyed a beautiful sunny day this past Sunday (June 14th), walking along the shore at Bayfront Park in Hamilton. Our families, friends and the community as a whole, showed great care by walking, donating, and offering support. Twenty-five walkers took part, walking the 1.5 kms along the waterfront- a perfect distance on such a warm day. We finished with refreshments and pride in knowing what an accomplishment we had all achieved.
The Hamilton-Wentworth/Niagara (and area) group is known to be a very caring and close group. We extend our invitation to each of you, old or new patients (family members as well) to join us anytime for tea or an informal meeting. This walkathon was no different... a social event getting to know one another and meeting new people, but most of all showing our support. This walk and all the other walks were a great success in many ways... we are all very proud. Regards to all, Vanessa.
Here is how we want to organize our research. Click here to read letter from CNETS President, Maureen Coleman.

Nancy's Walk
Small In Number, Yet Mighty In SPIRIT!
On Sunday, June 14, 2009 the first annual Kitchener-Waterloo Walk For CNETS Research began in Waterloo Park. Family, friends and members of all ages gathered bringing in more pledges and great cheer before beginning our 3.2 K walk.
Holding our signs high and pushing strollers and bike trailers, we walked through the park and out into the public eye. Throughout the walk new friends were made and chatter arose about great plans for future walks. Amongst all the excitement we even managed to get a few “honks” from cars driving by, followed by “cheers” from our walkers in concert. As we returned to the park, we attracted many curious eyes that read our signs and noticed our “black and white” T-shirts wondering what our cause was all about. We were only too happy to explain.
We had a successful day with our supporters. Not only were we able to exceed our goal of $2500.00, we were able to raise awareness about our important cause.
I would personally like to extend my deep appreciation and thanks to all who helped support CNETS Canada, whether through donations or walking. I could not have done it without you. Out of this whole experience, what moved me the most was that Sunday, June 14, 2009 only marked the beginning of many more walks for CNETS Canada. With this continuous support there is HOPE for all of us!
Thank you,
Nancy Ehiorobo

Maureen's Walk

Maureen’s walk along the Board walk in Toronto’s beaches was a warm and friendly occasion. It was however, far more than Maureen’s walk. It was also the walk of entire family and friend communities in the Toronto area. It was also very much Elissa’s walk, Diane’s walk, and Karen and Dorretta’s walk. It was a walk for many others for whom even this short walk would have been too arduous.
We welcomed Martin Long, President of the 11,500 strong Elementary Teachers of Toronto, who walked with us. We thank Elementary Teachers of Toronto for their generous $500.00 donation.
We thank everyone who donated. We are so grateful for their kind generosity.

This walk is called Angie’s Walk for Cathy to honour my Aunt Cathy. There will be CNETS Canada t-shirts, bracelets, and pins available prior to the walk and after the walk. My personal goal is to raise $500.00 from my Walk.

Charlotte's Walk

My walk along the streets of Tillsonburg took place on a beautiful warm and sunny day. It was also Cherie, my toy poodle's walk too. She is great at attracting attention. We meet a person in a wheelchair who just loved petting Cherie. We stopped off at the Chocolate Store and enjoyed an ice cream cone.
In the last two weeks, I passed out flyers downtown to bring awareness to our rare disease and the need for research. My walk was competing with Tillsonburg's big cancer drive, Relay for Life which started on June 12th at 7:00 p.m. and continued through to 7:00 a.m. the next morning. Over 1000 people took part, with 44 teams, walking throughout the night and raising over $143,000 dollars.
I thank everyone who donated to my Walk. I am so grateful for their generosity and support. Thank you Charlotte

Joanne's Walk

“Joanne’s Walk” was a huge success. I was thrilled to be joined by Al another Lungnoid and his wife Bev, as well as 39 other eager walkers.
June 14th was a beautiful day. We walked about 2 kms along the shore of Kalamalka Lake (the lake of many colours). We stopped at Rattlesnake point, to enjoy the fabulous view and take some pictures. We then returned to our starting point where we enjoyed a few snacks.
I would like to thank everyone who supported me in this walk. It meant so much to me to have the opportunity to promote awareness of Carcinoid/NeuroEndocrine Cancer and to help raise much needed research money. We have such an incredible giving community in Vernon, and I am blessed to have such wonderful family and friends here and across the country that gave to this walk. Together we raised $3,560.00. I am thrilled with this!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Joanne
