Why a Zebra?
In medical school, doctors are taught "when hearing hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras." Carcinoid Cancer & Neuroendocrine Tumors has been thought of as 'rare' and therefore may be considered a zebra. With greater awareness and quicker diagnosis, it is being shown that Carcinoid Cancer & Neuroendocrine tumors is not as rare as was thought a few years ago!
Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Network
The Carcinoid-NeuroEndocrine Tumour Society-Canada (CNETS Canada) was formed in 2007 to assist the Canadian community, primarily patients, with this type of disease.
The Canadian Government has confirmed CNETS Canada's charitable status effective February 1, 2008. Charitable Registration Number: 85623 3986 RR0001
The Objects of CNETS Canada are:
- to support cancer research by gifting funds to other registered charities or organizations that are otherwise qualified donees as defined in subsection 149.1(1) of the Income Tax Act;
- to provide workshops and seminars on issues dealing with conditions associated with carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumour diseases;
- to increase awareness of and educate the public and health care professionals on carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumours, their diagnosis, treatment and management; and
- to establish support groups to provide support services for those affected by carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumour diseases.
CNETS Canada Members
CNETS Members are Support Groups willing to locate and provide some resources and support to patients with carcinoid and related neuroendocrine tumour diseases and their families.
Each Member Group is represented at all meetings of the Members by the Group Leader. The Group Leader is eligible to vote for Members of the Board of Directors of CNETS Canada when elections are held.
Membership criteria allow members in isolated areas to be a group of one if they are willing to be a contact person for their area on behalf of CNETS Canada. This allows other patients to seek them out.
At every annual meeting of the Members, the report of the Board of Directors, the financial statements and the report of the auditors will be presented to the Members.
If all voting Members agree, and all Members have equal access, a Member may participate in a meeting of the Members via conference call or other communications facilities, as long as all persons participating in the meeting can communicate with one another.
By-laws can be repealed or amended by a by-law enacted by the Board of Directors and sanctioned by an affirmative vote of sixty-six and two-thirds percent of the Members, but are not enforced or acted upon until the approval of the Minister of Industry has been obtained.
CNETS Canada Group Leader's Role
First and foremost, we want to be as flexible as we can in defining the role of our Group Leaders. As a fledgling society, we are averse to specifying their roles too stringently. Those warm, caring souls who take on the role should find it easy and fulfilling. So, while not cast in stone, we generally take a Group Leader to be a person who takes the lead in arranging round-table gatherings whenever the group wants to hold one; frequency is a matter of local preference. The Group Leader is also available for ad hoc one-on-one meetings, phone calls, or emails with NET patients or their family members or friends as and when it is mutually convenient and needed.
A Group Leader will also be a point of contact for other groups in Canada as well as CNETS Canada itself. In his/her area, the Group Leader may, either personally or through others, advance the carcinoid awareness mission among health professionals and institutions.
