Dr. Pasieka graduated from the University of Western Ontario Medical School and did her General Surgery Residency Training at the University of Calgary. Following her residency she did three years of Endocrine Surgical Training. Upon completing a year of basic science research within the Division of Endocrinology at the University of Calgary, she went to the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor. Under the mentorship of Dr. Norman Thompson she completed a year of endocrine surgical training. From there she went on to study Endocrine Surgery at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden under the mentorship of Dr. Bertil Hamberger. She then returned to the University of Calgary at the Foothills Medical Center in 1991.
Since that time she has devoted her clinical practice solely to the realm of endocrine surgical diseases. Dr Pasieka was the driving force behind the development of a multidisciplinary clinic for neuroendocrine tumors as well as a multidisciplinary hereditary endocrine clinic, and a Fellowship program in Endocrine Surgery at the University. After 12 years as the Regional Division Chief in General Surgery at the University of Calgary, Dr Pasieka stepped down to concentrate on her international endeavors in Endocrine Surgery. Dr Pasieka completed a three-year term as Secretary Treasurer of the AAES (American Association of Endocrine Surgeons) and in 2010 was the President of the association.
She recently completed a 6-year term on the Council of the IAES (International Association of Endocrine Surgeons), and is a faculty member of the International Endocrine Post-graduate course. Dr Pasieka was awarded the prestigious honour as the Canadian representative of the James VI Travelling Surgical Fellowship for 2006. In 2007, she was named by the Women's Executive Network, as one of Canada's 100 Most Powerful Women.
Her areas of interests in Endocrine surgery evolve around neuroendocrine tumors, adrenal disease, thyroid cancer and the study of surgical outcomes in patients with hyperparathyroidism.
